Welcome to Kindergarten!

Welcome to Mrs. Cota’s Kindergarten Class!

WE TAKE CARE OF OURSELVES
WE TAKE CARE OF EACH OTHER
WE TAKE CARE OF THIS PLACE
Welcome to our classroom blog! The children and I will post weekly/biweekly about our classroom learning and play experiences. The blog will also keep you informed of important CCS dates and events.
Highlights of the Week
We had a great week! The children are quickly learning classroom routines and how to engage as a respectful and productive community of learners. Furthermore, the children are so enthusiastic about learning how to read, write and work with numbers. We are going to have a very successful year learning and playing together in Kindergarten!
Literacy Highlights
We are already on our way to becoming readers and writers! Our focus this week was on reading and writing our names, reading the alphabet, making connections between letters and sounds, rhyming, counting syllables, and reading together with predictable charts and books.
Math Highlights
Our focus this week was on oral counting, using our math hands, working with five frames, naming shapes and extending patterns. We also had multiple opportunities to explore with math materials that will become Workplace Stations in the weeks to come.
Friendly Reminders
Please send your children to school with water bottles.
Please help your children pack their Peace Time (Quiet Time) towels every Monday morning. I will send towels home on Fridays to be washed.
Please send your children to school in sneakers on Physical Education days.

We read The Kissing Hand and made raccoons as we talked about our first day of school feelings.

We used mirrors and color pencils to complete our first self portraits.
We will make self portraits at the end of every month.
L

We read The Rainbow Fish and talked about the different ways we can take care of each other in Kindergarten.

We learned all about the butterfly lifecycle. Thank you to Vivian and Molly for donating monarch caterpillars to our science center.

We love playing on the playground with our new friends!

We love Explore Time! Ask your child what his/her favorite centers are.

We are learning all about shapes.

We are using five friends to grow our understanding of numbers and quanties.

Geoboards & Bands

We can use unifix cubes to build and extend patterns.

We do yoga to help us relax and focus.

We visited our beautiful outdoor classroom during Kindergarten Community Time with Ms. Rowntree’s class. We read The Sunflower House by Eve Bunting in our very open CCS sunflower garden.

We made sunflowers out of right triangles.

Friday was Fire Safety Day at CCS. We learned how to take care of ourselves in the event of a real fire.

We used our imaginations as we pretended to be real fire fighters.

We read books about different families and then drew pictures of our own.
