Kindergarten Connection ~ October 28th

KINDERGARTEN CONNECTION ~ OCTOBER 28TH

Math Highlights
We are big thinking mathematicians in kindergarten! Our focus this week was on using ten frames and dot cards to develop our subitizing skills, the ability to “instantly see how many”. This skill plays a fundamental role in the development of students’ understanding of number. We also worked on modeling simple joining (addition) and separating (subtraction) situations with objects.

We are learning that mathematicians "talk math" by justifying their math thinking/reasoning to deepen their own understanding and also teach others.

Literacy Highlights
We are learning strategies good readers use. We know that good readers sometimes use their pointer finger to track words (match) as they read print from left to right. Good readers look at the pictures. Good readers get their lips ready and look closely at the beginning letter/sound of new words. Good readers stretch words out and they put sounds together.  Good readers look for chunks or parts of words they know to read tricky words. Good readers read punctuation and pay attention to bold print. In addition, good readers ask, “Does it look right?” “Does it sound right?” "Does it make sense?”

We can read and write the sight-words:  I, am, go, going, to, see, the, we, will, can, stop, yes, no, to, is, in, it, look, looking, and like.

The children are actively reinforcing new skills and concepts through motor-memory methods and kinesthetic procedures.  Motion chanting, skywriting, tracing, tapping and finger-blending solidify learning within the brain.  We are working on naming all 26 letters of the alphabet and matching them with their corresponding sounds. Ask your child to chant the letters/sounds for you as the weeks go by and they learn more and more letter names an sounds. Remind your child to show you the motions that go with each letter/sound.

We are learning how to form lowercase letters.

We continue to practice new learning in our morning messages.

October Calendars

We can use ten frames to help us to recognize quantities quickly.
We dissected apples and learned about their different parts.
We can label like scientists.
We like to play partner games.
This game is called compare and gives us practice comparing qualities using
the language greater than, less than, or equal to.
We can work together to solve math challenges!

Yellow and red make orange! We made pumpkins by mixing paint colors.
We greet each other in different ways each morning.
This greeting helped us practice poems about fall leaves.
We are readers!

We made fall trees using torn paper and paint.

We had fun writing about all of the different things we like.

We can read and order the tricky teen numbers.
We can put the alphabet back together.

We can use ten frame counting mats to solve addition and subtraction word problems.

We like to share our writing pieces during Writer's Workshop.
We are excited to see how our writing inspires others!

More letter writing practice

We are learning how to use number racks.
This tool helps us solve problems and represent our math thinking.

Teen number bingo helps us name the trickiest numbers from 1-100.

Leaf Rubbings

We love the fall season!
We are getting faster and faster at guessing the week's mystery word(s).
We like to hunt for sight words in books.

Four Winds
We had our first Four Winds and learned all about insects.
Ask your child to teach you what makes an insect an insect.
Thank you to our parent volunteer for connecting students to the science that is happening in our everyday world.

Exploring in our CCS Gardens
We like to search for insects.

Look what we found!

We are curious about the world around us.
We learn by doing.

We are learning how to form numerals the kindergarten way.

We can use tally marks to represent groups of five.
We can use tally marks count on from five.

We are becoming trick word (sight word) experts.

We love books!
We are learning how to partner read.
We are shape experts.
Look what we can create out of shapes!

This book inspired us to make our own Green Monsters!.

Stay tuned for our Halloween blog special...
