Kindergarten Connection ~ October 26th

Math Highlights
We are big thinking mathematicians in kindergarten! Our focus this week was on using ten frames and dot cards to develop our subitizing skills, the ability to “instantly see how many”. This skill plays a fundamental role in the development of students’ understanding of number. We also worked on modeling simple joining (addition) and separating (subtraction) situations with objects.

We are learning that mathematicians "talk math" by justifying their math thinking/reasoning to deepen their own understanding and also teach others.

Literacy Highlights
We are learning strategies good readers use. We know that good readers sometimes use their pointer finger to track words (match) as they read print from left to right. Good readers look at the pictures. Good readers get their lips ready and look closely at the beginning letter/sound of new words. Good readers stretch words out and they put sounds together.  Good readers look for chunks or parts of words they know to read tricky words. Good readers read punctuation and pay attention to bold print. In addition, good readers ask, “Does it look right?” “Does it sound right?” "Does it make sense?”

We can read and write the sight-words:  I, am, go, to, see, the, we, will, can, stop, yes, no, Boo, to, is, in, it, and like.

The children are actively reinforcing new skills and concepts through motor-memory methods and kinesthetic procedures.  Motion chanting, skywriting, tracing, tapping and finger-blending solidify learning within the brain.  We are working on naming all 26 letters of the alphabet and matching them with their corresponding sounds. Ask your child to chant the letters/sounds for you as the weeks go by and they learn more and more letter names an sounds. Remind your child to show you the motions that go with each letter/sound.

We can copy and create pattern block designs on iPads.
We can name the shapes: square, hexagon, rhombus, triangle and trapezoid

We can read and write the word the.

We read Ten Black Dots and were inspired to write our own version of this counting book.

We read It Looked Like Spilt Milk and were inspired to  write our own version of this book.

We can use stencils to make shapes. We can identify and describe shapes by their different attributes.

Fire Safety Day at CCS

We know how to Stop, Drop and Roll to put out a fire on our clothes.

Maybe we'll be firefighter heroes in the future.

We like to play firefighters on the playground.

We can write and/or complete telling sentences using our best kindergarten phonetic spelling and known sight words.

We can use LEXIA to help grow our reading skills.
We use this site once or twice a week during Work Board stations.
Your child can log onto Lexia at home through the school website by logging in with
using first name and first letter of last name. The password for all kindergarten children is funny.

We can teach others about the pumpkin life cycle.

We created directed drawings of pumpkins.

Play-dough Pumpkin Patch
We love to buddy read!

We can use ten frames to show quantities 1-10 quickly.
We can talk about our math thinking to teach others how we see and build  amounts that we see.

We can match letters with their corresponding sounds on magnetic tile boards.

We filled up our classroom penny jar and celebrated with a popsicle party!
We are so good at taking care of ourselves, each other, and our school!

Mr. Smith stopped by to play his ukulele for us.
Letter Sound Puzzle
We can make alphabet books.
We can roll dice and compare dots to name which amount is greater/less.

We dissected a pumpkin and discovered that a pumpkin has a shell, ribs, pulp and seeds.

We are working hard at forming the magic c letters c, a, d, g, q, e, s
We can build combinations to 10 using ten frames and unix cubes.
We can talk math to tell how many dots are red, how many are white, and how many dots there are altogether.

We can sort letters by their straight and curved lines.

We can make combinations of 5.

We can read and order numerals 0-20!
We love to rhyme.
We can put number puzzles together with our friends.
We can build sentence.
We love to write cards to special people.
We can never get enough book time!
We can clap words to hear their different syllables.
We can make patterns and pictures with shape stamps.

WE LOVE KINDERGARTEN!
