Kindergarten Connection ~ November 25

Happy Thanksgiving!
I am incredibly thankful to be your children's teacher.
It is a privilege to teach and learn with your kind, curious and hardworking children.
Thank you for teaming with me to make this a successful first year at CCS!

Writer's Workshop
We are writing up a storm in kindergarten! We are studying various authors and illustrators work to learn how writers create engaging and informative books. This week we learned the power of word choice, full illustrations and diagramming. Encourage your child to write a book at home. Maybe you and your child can co-author a book. Happy writing!

Math Highlights

We are becoming teen number experts in kindergarten! We can represent teen numbers as a group of ten and some more ones with ten frames, tally sticks, scattered objects and our math hands. We are learning how to represent the part-part-whole relationship of addition with objects and written equations. The children are working hard at justifying their math thinking as they work with partners and share in front of the class. We continue to practice naming numerals, ordering numerals, and counting forwards and backwards.

Science
We are leaning about the seasons and how animals prepare for the winter. We will begin a full weather unit in December.

We can use the before or after strategy to order numerals quickly.
We are working on counting, naming and ordering numerals 1-50!
We love to play partner math games! This game is called Butterfly Race.
This game helps us practice adding in  different ways.

This game is called Beat You to Five or Ten.
This game helps us build combinations of 5 and 10 in different ways.
We are beginning to become fluent with addition/subtraction facts to 10!
We know good mathematicians can explain their math thinking to help others understand.
This game is called Spill the Beans to 10.
This is another hands-on game to help grow our understanding of addition and subtraction within 10.
We are also learning how to form numerals the kindergarten way!

We are becoming sight word experts!

We love to read!
We practice reading everyday in different ways. We read together, in small groups and with partners.
We are feeling so proud of our developing reading skills!
We always make time for movement in school!
We love to dance and practice yoga poses.
Moving helps us relax, focus and learn!

We know how to form all 26 letters the kindergarten way!
Please encourage your child to begin letters at the top and use the expected formation.
We can name all 26 letters and match them with their corresponding sounds.
Ask your child to teach you how to read and chant this chart.
For a bonus, ask your child to teach you the digraphs at the bottom of the chart.
Letter Formation Practice
We know all about shapes!
We can talk about the different attributes of 2-D and 3-D shapes.
We can find shapes everywhere in our everyday world.
Go on a shape hunt in your home. How many of theses shapes can you find?

We love recess!
We love friends!
We love nature!
