Kindergarten Connection ~ April 20th

KINDERGARTEN CONNECTION

We love working and playing with our kindergarten friends!
Literacy Highlights
We are reading and writing up a storm in kindergarten! We are taking turns sharing our How  To writing pieces from the Author’s Chair and on the SMART Board. It is truly the greatest gift as a teacher to see your children stand in front of peers to celebrate their work. We continue to work on beginning letter blends (bl, gr, fl, str, br), digraphs, long and short vowel spellings, punctuation, letter formation, reader’s/author’s voice, adding more detail to our writing, and using non fiction text elements such as the table of contents and glossary.

Math Highlights
We are working on measurement (weight, length, capacity, and temperature), constructing and deconstruction three dimensional shapes, and interval counting with number lines.
We continue to work on using a variety of strategies to solve addition and subtraction
problems. The focus of this work is on explaining our math thinking to demonstrate understanding and to build a community of collaborative mathematicians. Play around with addition and subtraction problems at home and ask your child to teach you different strategies to solve problems. For example, if a your child is presented with a 10 dot frame, a 4 dot frame, and a 7 dot frame, how does he/she justify the sum 21. Does he/she touch count all 21 dots, organize 10 and four into 14 and then count on 7 more, notice groupings of 5’s and 10’s, work with known number combinations, and/or notice doubles facts.

Happy Spring!

We can tap to help us read and write cvc words.
We can read and write the classroom.
We were surprised by how many words we could read quickly.
Our reading skills are really taking off!

We can solve addition and subtraction story problems using a variety of strategies.
We can justify our math work to teach others about the different strategies used to solve math problems.

Ask your child to solve these problems for you.
Can he/she use counters (objects), paper and pencils, math hands, acting out, and/or equations to solve the problems?
Try solving it two different ways. Make up your own frog story problems.

we can build and read simple words.
Decade Day at CCS!
This is an example of a morning message we read and interact with during morning meeting.
We can represent 100 as 10 groups of 10.
We worked together to show 100 using different counters.
We love to work in small groups!

It feels so good to finish a challenging math job!
There's always time to play and be silly in kindergarten!

We made decade crowns.

Wow! Look what we can build when we work together.

We can tap, build and read nonsense words using magnetic letters.

Our order of new engineering toys came in this morning.!

We played digraph bingo.
We can listen closely for beginning and ending digraphs in words.
Ask you child to tell you the sounds sh, th & ch make in words.

We are wrapping up our How To writing unit.
Be on the look out for completed books in your child's backpack.
How To Make Milk
How To Swim
How To Take Care of a Baby
How to Grow An Apple Tree
We are in the middle of our Force and Motion unit.
We are learning all about pushes and pulls and different kids of motions.
How can we make something move fast, slow or stop?
What spins?
We can write about motions we observe/experience on the playgroup.
"I saw people on the slide."
"I saw people throwing leaves."
"I saw people playing soccer and running."
"I saw people running on the rock path."
We learned how to read and write the word said.
We noticed how quotation marks are used to show the reader what the characters are saying.

We broke apart spring chicken eggs to help us build, read and write high frequency words.
We can read and write the following words quickly: I, a, an, and, am, are, be, big, come, can, do, did, dad, don't, for, go, going, have, he, him, her, it, is, I, in, if, like, look, looking, me, my, mom, no, not, play, see, said, to, the, this, too, up, we, will, you, yes
