Kindergarten Connection - February 5th

KINDERGARTEN CONNECTION ~ FEBRUARY 5th

We are big thinking mathematicians in kindergarten! Our focus this week was on using ten frames and dot cards to develop our subitizing skills, the ability to “instantly see how many”. This skill plays a fundamental role in the development of students’ understanding of number. We also worked on modeling simple joining (addition) and separating (subtraction) situations with objects.

We are learning strategies good readers use. We know that good readers sometimes use their pointer finger to track words (match) as they read print from left to right. Good readers look at the pictures. Good readers get their lips ready and look closely at the beginning letter/sound of new words. Good readers stretch words out and they put sounds together.  Good readers look for chunks or parts of words they know to read tricky words. Good readers read punctuation and pay attention to bold print. In addition, good readers ask, “Does it look right?” “Does it sound right?” "Does it make sense?”

We read this book for inspiration before writing our own lists of things you need to make a snowman. We discovered that lists are a fast way to record important information. Ask your child to help you write lists at home.

His snowman needs 2 eyes, 1 scarf, 3 buttons...
Her snowman needs 1 carrot, 1 scarf, 1 hat, sticks, 3 buttons...
Katie from the STARS Room visited with her pet bunny.
We can read and locate numbers on a 50 chart.

We can tap, write and read CVC words. Ask your child to tap words like cat, lip, run, mug, wet... for you. Tapping is a very effective early reading and writing strategy.
We are working on writing true stories. This is a students true story about hiking in the woods.
We complete telling sentences about our shape snowmen. This student wrote, "My snowman's name is Bob. My snowman is happy."
We made symmetrical mittens for our Fun Friday activity with Ms. Rowntree's class.

We decorated the kindergarten hallway with our mittens and snowmen.

We can build, record and solve addition sentences up to 10.

CVC Word Puzzles

We are 100 experts!
We use different strategies to figure our where the pieces belong. We discovered that knowing the numeral that comes just before and just after helps us solve these puzzles quickly.

Still working on true stories! These kiddos love writing about their personal life experiences. We are working to include a beginning, middle and end to our stories. We know that true stores tell who, where and what happened. We are working to include labels and speech bubbles in our work.
We know how to form all 26 capital and lowercase letters!
We can read and write almost 25 sight words!
Broken Heart Game

February Calendars
We can write numerals 1-30!
The kindergarten kitchen is open for business!

The lego museum is never complete!

The Great Puzzle Challenge

Four Winds
Our wonderful Four Winds volunteers taught us all about how different animals adapt in the winter.

We worked together to write 100 words for our 100 Day of School museum.

We made counting by 10's crowns to celebrate the 100 Day.

100th Day of School Morning Message
100th Day of School Morning Greeting
We counted out 10 groups of 10 to string 100 necklaces.
