Kindergarten Connection ~ April 14th

HAPPY SPRING!
It is spring again. The earth is like a child that
knows poems by heart.  -Rainer Marie Rilke

Literacy Highlights
We are reading and writing up a storm in kindergarten! We are taking turns sharing our How  To writing pieces from the Author’s Chair and on the SMART Board. It is truly the greatest gift as a teacher to see your children stand in front of peers to celebrate their work. We continue to work on beginning letter blends (bl, gr, fl, str, br), digraphs, long and short vowel spellings, punctuation, letter formation, reader’s/author’s voice, adding more detail to our writing, and using non fiction text elements such as the table of contents and glossary.

Math Highlights
We are working on measurement (weight, length, capacity, and time), constructing and deconstruction three dimensional shapes, and interval counting with number lines.
We continue to work on using a variety of strategies to solve addition and subtraction
problems. The focus of this work is on explaining our math thinking to demonstrate understanding and to build a community of collaborative mathematicians. Play around with addition and subtraction problems at home and ask your child to teach you different strategies to solve problems. For example, if a your child is presented with a 10 dot frame, a 4 dot frame, and a 7 dot frame, how does he/she justify the sum 21. Does he/she touch count all 21 dots, organize 10 and four into 14 and then count on 7 more, notice groupings of 5’s and 10’s, work with known number combinations, and/or notice doubles facts.

The Maker Station was a big success! Thank you for all the donations!
He made a boat.
He made a robot.
Lots of creative inventions!
We can instantly recognize numerals 1-50!

The children like to set up writing workshop offices.
Sight Word Scavenger Hunt
We found 25 words hiding in our classroom.
We can tap, build, and write cvc words.

We were inspired to paint just like Picasso.
Number Puzzle Fun
Make Five
This game taught helped us practice composing 5 in different ways.
Cave Race
This game helped us practice our adding and comparing skills.
Beat You to 15 Cents
This game helped name coins, make 5, count by 5's, count on, and exchange five pennies for one nickel.
We love to read!
Friends are always looking for opportunities to listen to each other read.
We are weather experts. These children are observing the weather before recording the day's weather in their science journals.

We can puddle jump cvc words. Look at this kiddo jump from one sound to the next. We like to make reading fun and interactive in kindergarten!
We can use different math tools such has math hands and small objects to solve
understand and subtraction problems.
Make Five Game
We are shape experts!

We are working on writing How To books. How To books teach the reader how to do something and involve organized steps with helpful illustrations.
It is always important to share our work so that we can practice rereading it and get our peers feedback.
We know what it looks like and feels like to be respectful partners during Writer's Workshop.

Which Shape Will Win?
This game helps us compare sets, count on, add, name shapes, and recognize numerals quickly.
Build and Record with Shapes
This game helps us construct and deconstruct different shapes. It also gives us an opportunity to notice shape attributes.

We love to read in small guided reading groups.

Digraph Bingo
We know the digraphs sh, th, ck, ch

Rainbow Art

We can read and write color words.
We can write complete sentences and use the word because to help us add more information to our writing pieces.

Working Together

We can use real and electronic geo-boards to build shapes and play around with lines of symmetry.

Beat You to Twenty
The Humane Society visited us at CCS to teach how to be safe with dogs and cats.

Who knew ordering numbers could be so fun!
We are working hard to differentiate between b and d.
The Vermont Symphony Orchestra came to CCS to teach us all about percussion instruments.
We are learning how to fold paper origami.

We discovered lines and a variety of shapes in our folded work.

We learned how to use a ruler to make starting lines. We also learned how to measure in inches.

We know 10 standing yoga poses. These poses help us feel relaxed and focused  throughout our busy school day. This is flamingo pose.
This is easy pose. This pose helps us reset and prepare for working and playing in the classroom after recess.

Have a wonderful weekend!
