Kindergarten Connection ~ April 8th

HAPPY SPRING!
It is spring again. The earth is like a child that
knows poems by heart.  -Rainer Marie Rilke

Literacy Highlights
We are reading and writing up a storm in kindergarten! We are taking turns sharing our work from the Author’s Chair and on the SMART Board. It is truly the greatest gift as a teacher to see your children stand in front of peers to celebrate their work. We continue to work on beginning letter blends (bl, gr, fl, str, br), digraphs, long and short vowel spellings, punctuation, letter formation, reader’s/author’s voice, adding more detail to our writing and using non fiction text elements such as the table of contents and glossary.

Math Highlights
We are working on measurement (weight, length, capacity, and time), constructing and deconstruction three dimensional shapes and interval counting with number lines.
We continue to work on using a variety of strategies to solve addition and subtraction

problems. The focus of this work is on explaining our math thinking to demonstrate understanding and to build a community of collaborative mathematicians. Play around with addition and subtraction problems at home and ask your child to teach you different strategies to solve problems. For example, if a your child is presented with a 10 dot frame, a 4 dot frame, and a 7 dot frame, how does he/she justify the sum 21. Does he/she touch count all 21 dots, organize 10 and four into 14 and then count on 7 more, notice groupings of 5’s and 10’s, work with known number combinations, and/or notice doubles facts.

Exploring With Large Pattern Block Shapes
Exploring With Magnet Shape Tiles
Exploring With Shape Attribute Blocks
Exploring With Polyhedrons
We discovered five ways to construct a hexagon!
We discovered how to make a large hexagon out of big and small triangles.
We can build growing patterns.
Mr. DiNicola sang to us at snack time.
We followed a recipe to make pancakes from scratch. We drenched the pancakes in the sweet syrup from our friend Patrick's farm. Thank you!

We invited Mrs. Rowntree's class over for a pancake snack.
We can represent teen numbers as a group of ten and some more ones. We can write addition equations to match our work on double ten frames.

Hungry Caterpillar Game
We can use geo boards, bands and rulers to record shape design plans.
Which Shape Will Win Game

Pattern Block Shapes and Recording Sheets
We can draw pictures and write executions to solve addition and subtraction problems.

We can write telling sentences to share our weekend news.

We can organize our writing ideas and pictures to help us write How To books. This friend wrote a book about how to make maple syrup.

We love to share our writing on the SMART Board. It's so exciting when everyone can read our writing!
Spring is in the air! We are busy reading fiction and informational books all about the spring season and weather.
We know more than 30 high frequency words! Knowing these words helps us read and write quickly.

CVC Work
Say it, tap it, spell it, write it, read it!
We can puddle jump to segment and blend CVC words.

April Calendars

Add caption
We can read and write two more trick (high-frequency words). The children are feeling good about their ability to read and write these words quickly.

This month's Four Winds was about maple trees. We learned all about  maple trees and tasted tree sap and syrup.

Bark Rubbing
Meet Miss Naomi, a new CCS K para educator.
Name Patterns

We can respond to questions in writing. What is your favorite dinner?

We went on a sight word scavenger hunt.

We can build and read sentences.
We learned several poems about wind and made wind socks.
New Math Work Place Stations
Counting Coins
We can count one dime and some more pennies.
10...11,12,13

We can add and compare sums.
Number Scrolls
We can write numbers 1-100!

HAVE A WONDERFUL  EXTRA LONG WEEKEND WITH YOUR KIND, CURIOUS
AND HARD WORKING CHILDREN!
