Kindergarten Connection ~ November 5th

KINDERGARTEN CONNECTION ~ NOVEMBER 5th

Math Highlights
We are big thinking mathematicians in kindergarten! Our focus this week was on using ten frames and dot cards to develop our subitizing skills, the ability to “instantly see how many”. This skill plays a fundamental role in the development of students’ understanding of number. We also worked on modeling simple joining (addition) and separating (subtraction) situations with objects.

We are learning that mathematicians "talk math" by justifying their math thinking/reasoning to deepen their own understanding and also teach others.

Literacy Highlights
We are learning strategies good readers use. We know that good readers sometimes use their pointer finger to track words (match) as they read print from left to right. Good readers look at the pictures. Good readers get their lips ready and look closely at the beginning letter/sound of new words. Good readers stretch words out and they put sounds together.  Good readers look for chunks or parts of words they know to read tricky words. Good readers read punctuation and pay attention to bold print. In addition, good readers ask, “Does it look right?” “Does it sound right?” "Does it make sense?”

We can read and write the sight-words:  I, am, go, to, see, the, we, will, can, stop, yes, no, Boo, to, is, in, it, and like.

The children are actively reinforcing new skills and concepts through motor-memory methods and kinesthetic procedures.  Motion chanting, skywriting, tracing, tapping and finger-blending solidify learning within the brain.  We can name all 26 letters of the alphabet and match them with their corresponding sounds. Ask your child to chant the letters/sounds for you. Remind your child to show you the motions that go with each letter/sound.

We made fall trees using torn construction paper and sponge paints.

We wrote this predictable chart to help us learn to read and write the word like.
We made 1-10 ten frame books!

We can teach others how we know there are five dots on the frame.
We know that there are many ways to make and represent quantities.

We can form magic c letters the kindergarten way! Ask your little learner how knowing how to correctly form the letter c can help him/her form the letters a, g, d, q, e
We work once or twice a week on iPads using math, literacy and art apps.
We work in a small group on iPads while our friends work in small reading and writing groups.
We are writers! We are learning how to "just go for it" during Writer's Workshop time. We can say words slowly to hear and record letter sounds and we can use the word wall to help us write high frequency words.
We can read many high frequency words! Knowing these words quickly will help us become good readers.
We can build sentences that make sense.
We can count and match objects to teen numerals!
Ten Apples Up On Top
We got together with our friends in Ms. Rowntree's class for this super fun Friday Project.

Our New Math Workboard
We can order numerals 1-10 and 1-20.

Which Bug Will Win?
We can compare quantities using the benchmarks 5 and 10.

We mixed yellow and blue paint to make green. We are very curios why Mrs. Cota made us paint large green circles...
We made big green monster after reading Ed Emberly's story Go Away Big Green Monster.

We are learn how to count forward from any given number.
We learned how to use LEXIA
Stay tuned for your child's account information so that he/she can use LEXIA at home if your family plan allows for it.
We made and read several pumpkin/harvest books.
Ask your child to teach you all about the pumpkin life cycle.

Fun Friday with Ms. Rowtree's Class
