Kindergarten Connection ~ October 23nd

KINDERGARTEN CONNECTION ~ OCTOBER 23rd

We are big thinking mathematicians in kindergarten! Our focus this week was on using ten frames and dot cards to develop our subitizing skills, the ability to “instantly see how many”. This skill plays a fundamental role in the development of students’ understanding of number. We also worked on modeling simple joining (addition) and separating (subtraction) situations with objects.

We are learning strategies good readers use. We know that good readers sometimes use their pointer finger to track words (match) as they read print from left to right. Good readers look at the pictures. Good readers get their lips ready and look closely at the beginning letter/sound of new words. Good readers stretch words out and they put sounds together.  Good readers look for chunks or parts of words they know to read tricky words. Good readers read punctuation and pay attention to bold print. In addition, good readers ask, “Does it look right?” “Does it sound right?” "Does it make sense?”

We can read and write the sight-words:  I, am, go, to, see, the, we, will, can, stop, yes, no, Boo, to, is, in, it, and like.

10 groups of ten makes 100!
We are beginning to construct simple telling sentences using known sight words and our sounding out words skills.

Writer's Workshop ~ We published our first books!
This is a book to teach the reader all about her family.
This is a book to teach the alphabet.
This is a book to teach about inside and outside types of play at school.
This is a book to teach all about Rescuebots.
We worked with iPads to practice forming letters and matching letters and sounds.
We made diagrams of apples.

Guided Meditation Mindfullness break
We made fall leaf crowns and leaf rubbings with Ms. Rowntree's class for our
Fun Friday Activity.

Beat You to Five
This partner math workplace game teaches us about different combinations to 5.
Polydrons
This math workplace station teaches us about shapes. We are learning how to construct three dimensional shapes.
Which Numeral Will Win?
This math workplace game teaches us how to identify and write numerals 0-5.

Patterns
This math workplace station teaches us how to read, extend and record AB, ABB,ABC,ABBC, and ABCD patterns.

Fall Leaf Water Coloring
We are learning all about vowels. We know that each vowel has two sounds, long and short, and that vowels are in every word.
We are pumpkin life-cycle experts.
Ask your child to teach all about the pumpkins life.

We read Ten Apples on Top and then put 10 apples on top of our own heads.

Smart Board Wheel of Fortune

Explore Time Fun
These friends made a growing pattern out of giant pattern blocks.
Two lego experts!
Four Winds
We learned all about see dispersal. We collected seeds and watched seeds disperse by air on our first windy fall day at CCS.
Wow! Look at all the seeds inside a sunflower.

Thanks to our wonderful Four Winds parent volunteers for their engaging lessons and commitment to guiding children wonder about their natural world.

We mixed blue and yellow paint to paint large green circles for a top secret Halloween week project.
We are learning how to add using ten frames, math hands and number racks.
October Number Corner
Zoom in and ask your child to teach all about this month's number corner
patterns and counting jobs.

We made rocket ships to practice our backwards sequencing skills.

We read Mouse Shapes and then made our own mice.
